Weight Loss Surgeries

Obesity and excessive smoking are the leading causes of death all over the world. In many western societies, being fat is a growing epidemic. There are many ways to address the risks associated with being overweight, such as exercise, medications, diet, weight loss programs and surgery. Over the past few years, surgical approaches have been used on people who are considered overweight and obese. The surgery works to ensure that the amount of food that's absorbed into the body  is reduced. The surgical procedures are 70 percent effective and after carrying out the operation, weight loss is dramatic.

Because of a drastic reduction in weight, problems such as hypertension, sleep apnea, high blood fats and apnea will disappear. And because these ailments are lifestyle related, the weight loss  will offer significant benefits. Gastric bypass, gastric pacemaker and lap banding are just some of the common surgical procedures, which offer excellent results.

Weight Loss: Gastric Bypass

This method entails altering the routes of the intestines and the stomach. It makes the size of the stomach smaller, thereby reducing the rate at which food absorption occurs in the body. Depending on the patient being operated on, the procedure could entail creating large or small incisions with the help of a small camera and a range of other highly specialized tools. The expected result is a loss of around 100 lbs over a span of 20 months. However, it is important to know about the side effects that are identified with this procedure. Vitamin deficiency is one of the side effects, which patients could face. Available statistics show that 1 out of 200 people have died after undergoing this procedure.

Weight Loss: Lap Band

This method is less dangerous than gastric bypass and works by ensuring that the size of the stomach is restricted. However, this method does not reduce the amount of food, which is absorbed. The technique places silicon bands on the top parts of the stomach, which gets tightened after surgery. This ensures that the rate at which food is passed is reduced drastically. Considerable weight loss is achieved within the first one year and weight loss continues at a slower pace in subsequent years. It is advisable to combine this method with others such as massage as it has been proven to deliver better results.

Weight Loss: Gastric Pacemaker

This method involves the fixing of electric pacemakers that enhance the rate of stimulation in the stomach. The pulses, which are produced, pass the right signals to the brain when the stomach is full. This method is slow, but leads to weight loss in the long run.
