Yoga for You - 10

Ardha-Matsyendrasana (Half Matsyendra Pose)




Method:
Sit with your legs stretched out. Bend your right leg at the knee, and place the heel close to perineum. Bend the left leg at the knee, and place the left foot by the external side of the right thigh close to the hip joint. The left ankle will remain close to the root of the right thigh. Do not move the right heel from perineum. Pass your right hand over the left knee rotating whole trunk to the left, till your right shoulder and left knee press against each other. Catch hold of your left foot or the toe firmly with your right hand. Turn slowly and steadily to the left, swing the left hand back and hold the right thigh at groin. Turn the neck too so that your chin is in line with the left shoulder. Keep the chest erect. Remain thus for five seconds. Repeat the entire procedure by switching leg positions. This will complete the pose. The pose is to be practiced only for a few seconds to start with, the maximum period devoted to each side being not more than a minute. The Pose Can be repeated according to each individual’s capacity.

Benefits:
This asana stimulates the liver and kidneys. It relieves dyspepsia and constipation, and cures loss of appetite. It Is therapeutic for muscular pain, backache and sciatica. It makes the spine supple.

Caution:
People with back injury should not perform this asana.

Yoga for You - 9

Dhanurasana (Bow Pose)


Very specific for ladies problems. Cures sleeplessness. reduces obesity, invigorates. Relieves diabetes, dyspepsia, weak peristalsis. Develops back and extremities.

Method:
Lie on your stomach with your face down. Relax the muscles. Bend your leg at the knees and fold them over the thighs. Hold the ankle firmly with your hands. The knees should be kept together. Raise your head, chest and knees by pulling the legs slowly with the hands so that your whole body rests on the abdomen and the spine is arched backwards like a bow. Int his pose the extremities are fully stretched. Remain in this pose for as long as you are comfortable. Repeat four to six times.

This is a combination of Bhujangasana and Salabhasana.

Benefits:
It relieves insomnia, and obesity, and makes one active. This asana strengthens the arms, legs, abdomen, back muscles and the spine. it is also therapeutic for osteoporosis.

Caution:
People with hernia should not perform this asana. Pregnant women should also avoid this exercise.

Yoga for You - 8

Salabhasana (Locust Pose)

Specific for ladies problems, cures sleeplessness. Reduces obesity. Acts on Chest, abdomen, rectum, and extremities.

Method:
Lie on your stomach with your chin resting on the ground and soles pointing upwards. Keep your arms straight along the body, palm facing upwards with fingers clenched. Inhale slowly. Raise the legs, the hips and the lower abdomen up in one straight line, putting the whole weight of the body on your chest and hands. Remain in the pose for ten seconds in the beginning and prolong the time as long as you can retain the breath. Lower your legs slowly, relax all the muscles and exhale. REpeat the process four to five times according to your capacity.

Benefits:
It helps obese people. Alleviated insomnia, bronchitis, and tones up the liver, pancreas, kidneys and the abdominal muscles. It strengthens the thighs, hands and the legs. This asana relieves lumbago, rheumatism, arthritis, cervical, spondylosis , back pain and menstural problems.

Caution:
People with Hernia should not perform this asana. Pregnant women should also avoid this exercise.

Yoga for You - 7

Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose)

Specific for ladies problems. Cures sleeplessness. Helps maintain celibacy. Acts on heart abdomen, rectum and back.

Method:
Lie on your stomach with your face downwards and keep your feet together, with soles pointing upwards. Place your palms on the ground just below the shoulders.
Inhale, and slowly raise your head, neck, chest and upper abdomen from the navel up. Arch your back, thus bending your spine as far as you can, looking upwards. Keep the lower half of your body to the ground. Maintain this position and hold your breath for a few seconds.

Exhale , and slowly return to the original position till the head touches the ground. Repeat this asana at least six times.

Benefits:
It cures insomnia, tones up heart muscles, relieves cervical spondylitis, and tones up the reproductive system in women, and the back muscles. It keeps the spine supple.

Caution:
People with hernia should not perform this asana. Pregnant women should also avoid this exercise.

Yoga for You - 6

Paschimottanasana (Posterior stretching pose)

Destroys all diseases and prolongs life, especially in combination with Sirshasana and sarvangasana.


Method:
Lie on your back with your legs stretched out straight, and your arms over the head. Inhale, and slowly raise your arms, head and trunk. Exhale and bend forward gradually. Contract the abdomen. Do not raise your knees.

Catch hold of the big toes with the forefingers. Bend further and bury your face between the knees. Inhale and return to the starting point.

Benefits:
It tones up hip muscles, strengthens back muscles, keeps the spine supple, and helps cure sciatica. It also relieves constipation, indigestion and other abdominal disorders.

Caution:
This asana should be performed slowly, if your spine is stiff. Habitually constipated people should not perform this asana for more than three minutes. Those having appendicitis or hernia should not perform this asana.

Yoga for You - 5

Sarvangasana (All Organs Pose)


Destroys all disease and prolongs life, especially in combination with Sirshasana and Paschimottanasana cures varicose veins.


Method:
Lie on your back, and slowly raise your legs, lifting the hips and the trunk, so that they remain almost vertical. Rest your elbows on the ground firmly and support the back with both the hands. Press your chin against the chest.
Remain thus for two minutes to start with and gradually increase the period to 30 minutes.

Benefits:
Relieves muscular pain, rheumatism, nervousness, varicose veins, and cures insomnia, giddiness, loss of appetite, and indigestion. it purifies blood, strengthen nerves, and is a brain tonic. It keeps the spine supple.

This asana also relieves complaints of eyes, ears, nose and salivary glands, diseases of the throat, including tonsils, thyroid and parathyroid glands. It cures constipation, piles and tones ovaries, uterus and displacement of uterus.

Caution:
This asana should not be practiced if you are suffering from chronic nasal catarrh.

Vajrasana (Adamantine Pose)


Prevent grey hair. Acts on coccygeal and sacral bones: and lower extremities. Cures dyspepsia and flatulence.

Method:
Kneel down, and sit on your heels. keep the knees quite close, and your spine erect. Your hands should rest on the knees.

Benefits:
This pose cures dyspepsia, flatulence, and purifies and tones the coccyx and sacral bones through increased blood supply to pelvic region, relieves muscle pain of thighs, knees, legs, toes and sciatica. Tones up muscles and nerves of thighs and legs.

Caution:
If your joints are stiff and do not permit easy movement, don't strain yourself.

Yoga for You - 3

Pavanamuktasana (Wind-relieving Pose)



Acts on abdominal and rectal regions. Cures acidity, dyspepsia flatulence and constipation.

Method:
Lie down on your back, and stretch your legs. As you inhale, raise the right leg, bend it at the knees and draw it toward the chest. Press the knee upon your chest using both the hands. Hold your breath and remain thus for five to ten seconds. Exhale, and release the knees, bring your leg to its original position and relax. Repeat with the other leg, and then with both the legs together. These three processes will make one complete round, Which can be repeated four to five times. The regulation of breath should be resorted to only after you are able to perform the pose properly.

Benefits:
Relieves acidity, constipation, dyspepsia, flatulence and helps tone up muscles.

Swastikasana (Auspicious pose)

Meditative pose. Acts on coccygeal and sacral bones: thighs and legs.

Method:
Sit down with your legs outstretched. Place the right heel against the left hip joint so that the sole touches the thigh. Similarly, place the left heel against the right groin. Insert the toes of your left leg between the right calf and thigh muscles. Keep the spine erect and place the hands near the thigh joints, with your elbows bent slightly.

Benefits:
This Asana purifies and tones the coccyx and sacral bones through increased blood supply to pelvic region. relieves rheumatism of thighs, weakness of legs.
It is therapeutic for those having varicose veins.

Siddhasana (Perfect Pose)


Meditative pose. Cures Venereal diseases, diabetes and piles. Helps maintain celebacy. Acts on coccygeal and sacral bones: thighs and legs.

Method:
Sit down with both your legs stretched forward. Bend your left knee and place the heel against the right thigh touching the perineum. Bend your right knee and place the right heel against the pubic bone. The lower portion of your right foot should be thrust between the left thigh and the left calf. Keep the body erect and place the hands near the thigh joints, with your elbow bent slightly. Breath normally.

Benefits:
This Asana helps treat diabetes and piles. It purifies and tones the coccyx and sacral nerves through increased blood supply to the pelvic region, relieves rheumatism of thighs, weakness of legs.

Caution:
Women should not perform this asana.

Facts on Honey and Cinnamon: It is found that a mix of honey and cinnamon cures most diseases. Honey is produced in most of the countries of the world.
Scientists of today also note honey as very effective medicine for all kind of diseases. Honey can be used without any side effects which is also a plus point.
Science says that all though honey is sweet, But when it taken in the right dose as a medicine, it do not harm even diabetic patient.

HEART DISEASES:
Make a paste of honey and cinnamon powder, Use it on toast instead of jelly and jam and eat it regularly for breakfast. It reduces the cholesterol and could potentially save one from heart attack. Also,if you already had an attack studies show that you could stay miles away from the next attack. Regular use of cinnamon honey strengthens the heart beat.

In America and Canada, various nursing homes have treated patients successfully and have found that as one ages the arteries and veins lose their flexibility and get clogged; honey and cinnamon revitalize the arteries and the veins.

Two tablespoons of honey and three teaspoons of Cinnamon Powder mixed in 16 ounces of tea water given to a cholesterol patient reduces the level of cholesterol in the blood by 10 percent within two hours.
